He’s awake!
Today was a good day. This morning, they took the chest tube out of Theo’s chest and took him off of morphine, so while he still had the ventilator in when I went to see him, he was fully alert. We turned off the billy-lights for a while so that we could interact, and he was looking at me when I talked, grabbing my hand, and generally being a little newborn boy, with all requisite cuteness.
He was breathing more on his own than with the ventilator and this evening, they took him off of it! So he’s breathing on his own, and we’re looking for a really good night tonight so that some more of the tubes can come off tomorrow. He really is an expressive little guy, and it felt great to be able to interact with him, rather than just sit there with him morphined out. He is still somewhat jaundiced, but again, not usual (Jakob was too) and not something to get too worried about.
So we’re back to hoping that we’ll see him home some time next week.
On a silly note, I got an official Good Feeling about all this when I got into the car to drive home from the hospital and "Domino" by Van Morrison came on. O.k. — it’s hard not to have a good feeling when that song comes on, but I’ll take all the good omens I can get.
And lest you think we’re ignoring Jakob, he and I went to the playground today where we met one my SLA colleagues who spotted Jakob on the big boy swing while I snapped this picture:
Jakob decided that the little kid swings weren’t cool enough for him, so he was on the big ones today. As you can see, he’s pretty intent on doing it well.
He’s also a total ham. This is what happens when you say, "Smile, Jakob!"
