Tonight was SLA’s first foray into live performance. And in keeping with our general sense of doing things differently, the SLA Drama Crew (and yes, I just gave them that name) decided to write their own original play. Thus was born "Evolution: A Love Story," an hour long original student production. The cast and crew transformed our little drama room into a black box theater, complete with stage lights, and in front of 100 family, friends, teachers and classmates, the kids put on a truly amazing show. It was alternately funny, serious, sad, powerful, meaningful and always very SLA.

It never ceases to amaze me how, once you decide you can reinvent, everything is on the table to change. This was the brainchild of Ms. Weinraub, Mr. Kay and a group of kids who wanted to put on a show. I’m not sure if the kids realized how much work was going to be involved in creating an original dramatic show, but I do know how rewarded they all felt by the experience. Tomorrow night is the second show, and my biggest fear is that we’re already outgrowing our little SLA theater.

Congratulations to the cast and crew for creating the latest piece of the SLA story, for creating your own unique vision of what a school play can be and for creating something from thin air that would not have existed without your powerful combination of vision, talent and sweat equity!
