Though this is not the fault of the U. Conn Huskies, they didn’t deserve to win this game. I don’t know what the refs were doing, but this was one of the most lopsided games I’ve seen in terms of the officiating. Washington had five players foul out, and I think two other players had four fouls. And at a critical sequence in overtime, the refs didn’t call an obvious charge against UConn and then didn’t call an even more obvious goaltending call on the other end.
Despite all of that, Washington nearly pulled off the upset.
They should have. They outplayed UConn.
I always hated as a coach when the refs ended up having more of an impact than they should. I know the feeling those players and coaches will have in the locker room. It’s that feeling of ‘What more did we have to do to win this game?’
It’s a lousy feeling.
(O.k. — other than that, it’s been a really thrilling tournament. Go Villanova!)
