Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers. I really can’t think of two NFL folks who deserve it more than Jerome Bettis and Bill Cowher. Both are great guys who have gotten close before, and now they’ve both broken through.
But this game did little to counter the idea that the best teams didn’t get here this year. This was an ugly game that really was defined by mistakes rather than great plays. Seattle mismanaged the clock at the end of both halves. (Granted, the second half didn’t matter much.) Roethlisberger plays gutsy football, but he did most of his damage with his legs, not his arm. And both QBs had red-zone interceptions that could have cost their teams the game.
Yes… the Randle-El pass to Hines Ward was cool… as was the Parker run… and in the end, the game came down to those two plays. The Steelers made two great plays that the Seahawks didn’t make. But it never felt like the defenses were dominating — if anything, the refs seemed to dominate the Seahawks — I was rooting for the Steelers, but even to me, it seemed like the refs called back almost every big play the Seattle made.
Anyway… not a Superbowl for the ages, but a decent game, and I will say that the Steelers have some of my favorite "good guy" players in the game right now — Bettis, Cowher, Hines Ward and Rothlisberger — so it is great to see them get the win.
But if I was a Seattle fan, I’d have a really bad taste in my mouth. MVP of the game? Randle-El? Anyone? Not easy to find one. I’d give it to the refs.
