There is definitely a movement, I'm just afraid that it is shrinking rather than growing. Or in a steady state?

Hi Chris:

I really enjoy reading about the process you are going through as you ready for the SLA opening. Thanks for taking time to update us all.

We got some great news in Northern Minnesota here today - our charter application was approved! (Last submission round only 4 of 25 applications were approved, so we were a little worried if we would be a "go". However, today we're a step closer to being real.)

Opening in the fall of 2007, a 10th-12th grade chartered high school on Minnesota's "Iron Range" - we're going to be the East Range Academy of Technology and Science (yes, the e-rats!) We are so looking forward to building a "school community that matters" to kids in our rural area.

It's kind of scary because we're going to be the only charter school in our area (at least for about 65 miles), but it's really neat to read and follow you as you prepare for your opening. Maybe someday we'll be able to come and visit SLA as one of our collaborating schools!

Thanks again for sharing the process,
Amy Hendrickson

Chris, do you know a source for a list of innovative schools like this one, and your's? Or, if you wouldn't mind, could you jot down such a list? I'd really like to know how many schools are implementing the philosophy of SLC, and how they are distributed.

2 sites might help you in your query:

1) Progressive Education National Network:
http://peninsulaschool.org/progressiveeducationnetwork/index.php (soon to be www.progressiveed.org). A forum for organizing a national progressive educsation movement.

Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO):
http://www.educationrevolution.org/co20coset.html
Check out their listings under "member schools" in the left-hand column. Not all "progressive" schools are alike---.
