Early this morning, November 15, 2012, my father ended his six-year battle with cancer. He was with his wife and children who made sure that his final moments were filled with laughter and love as he had lived. He will be deeply, deeply missed by his family and the many friends whose lives he touched. And as I wrote, I will miss him more than I can possibly say. And thank you to everyone who has reached out across so many media – your words mean the world to my family and me.
There’s much more to write in time about how we all in the edu-world have an obligation to the folks in my father’s generation who have fought the good fight… and how it is now our job to pick up the mantle, but that is a post for another day.
I wanted to let everyone know the funeral arrangements:
Services will be held Sunday November 18 @ 2:00 pm
Adath Israel Synagogue
1958 Lawrenceville Rd.

Shiva will be held at my parents’ house on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
Chris, I lost my dad a year and a half ago and I think if him every day. My thoughts are with you and your family.
My thoughts go out to you and your family at this difficult time. Hold on to the incredible memories and cherish the times you shared with him.
I am so sorry about your father. Please accept my condolences and try to remember all of the good things. He’d be proud of what you’re doing and what you have yet to do.
I am so very sorry for your loss. With sincere sympathy, Joan McCloughan
Chris – so sorry for you loss. My condolences to you and all those your father loved – I am sure he will be missed by many.
Sincere condolences and wishes for strength and comfort.
Our thoughts are with you. It was great to hear the stories about your dad when we were together with Ira in DC.
I am new to your blog, found it b/c of my passion for whole mind and whole heart education to develop truly passionate learners and problem-solvers to sustain such a complex world.
I see now, reading this and your ‘ pre-eulogy” about your father previous to this, how blessed you were with the most holistic and human of educations, how truly blessed you were that that critical teacher was your ‘father’. How that wonderful legacy of truly ‘human’ education for the values most important for a thriving humanity, were carried through in you and the work you do and share with others.
Your father does live on; thank you for sharing his lessons and love with us who strive to make education about these very values, this very human, important understanding about what it means to leave the world a little bit better than we found it by caring for others as the foremost lesson we teach.
In gratitude and care for your whole family, and the inspirational memory of your father that now lives on in all of us and hopefully the children we touch.
Chris, You are an amazing legacy to your father and I know that you will keep his memories alive. Know that there are many who are here for you at this difficult time and please let the SLA community know what we can do to support you.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I lost my father this summer and it was traumatic for me even though I thought I was prepared. I can but imagine what it is like for you though as each loss is deeply personal and felt in its own way. His legacy lives on in you his son though and for that we are all thankful.
Chris, your dad was great. He was one of those people that you might only meet for 5 minutes, but would never forget. My husband, Jason, always jokes to Liz and Todd that Sid reminds him of “the most interesting man in the world” (from the Dos Equis commercials) – not just because of his good looks, but because he always has a great story to tell. We’re going to miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Wishing you deepest sympathies! I have no doubt you have and will continue to make your father proud.
Will keep you and your family in my prayers.
Peace,
Mary g

Chris, our heartfelt thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. Words do not express the loss in our lives when a parent passes.
